This week's anime club meeting was tonight. Because it's Labor Day weekend, most of the members went home to visit their families. Because of this, we decided to show two films completely separate from the series we decided we'd watch regularly. As such, I decided to stay for the first, but skip out on Lupin III, as it didn't look all that great. The first movie shown, however, was an absolutely wonderful Studio Ghibli film by the name of The Cat's Return.
The movie is about a young girl named Haru, who doesn't exactly have all the confidence in the world. In fact, one of the only things she's semi-decent at is Lacrosse, and even then, we don't really get to see her in action, so you have to wonder about her skills in that as well. Well, on her way home from school one day, she sees a cat walking along with a package in its mouth getting ready to cross the road right in front of a semi. Haru comes to the rescue just in time, and is literally just able to get the cat across the road. The cat then stands up, thanks her for her extreme help in saving his life, and walks away. Pretty strange so far, but it gets more interesting. Turns out the cat was actually the prince of the Cat Kingdom. And they want to show their gratitude in every way possible...
Now, take that, add a wanted criminal, a living statue of a cat named Baron, a wise-cracking crow, and a senile old king, and you've got one great movie. Honestly, this is one of the best things I've seen Studio Ghibli (creators of Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away) come out with. I'm very glad I got the chance to see it. Currently, there aren't plans to release it in the US, but you never know.
( And now for more research findings. This time, they're from an actual book! )
