Tonight will be a blood moon. It's also the night that "Dracula" is being performed at Macey Center. Talk about coincidence. ("Blood moon" is a term describing the red color of the moon during a full lunar eclipse.)
The lyrics page for "Reise, Reise" is complete. It took me a while, and digging up my old Russian-English dictionary, but it's done. And now, a short synopsis of the album.
"Reise, Reise" is Rammstein's "political points" album. Done in a more heavy metal style than "Mutter," yet not quite as hard as "Sehnsucht," one could describe the sound as a mit between metal and techno, in a way. By song, these are the themes:
"Reise, Reise" - The anti-war song, especially speaking out against seaborne warfare. Literally translated, it means "Travel, travel"; however, the actual meaning is different. It's a phrase used on German ships meaning "Wake up," and is derived from a Middle High German verb, from which English can also trace the verb "to rise".
"Mein Teil" - The true-event documentary. They had two of these on "Herzeleid" ("Rammstein" and "Weisses Fleich"). Essentially, they took an actual event and turned it into song. In this case, it was an incident involving a cannibal who had advertised online his search for human food. As the song says, "Denn du bist was du isst" (Because you are what you eat). Translated, it means "My Thing."
"Dalai Lama" - The creepy ballad. On "Mutter," this was the song "Spieluhr." This song is called Dalai Lama because the current one is afraid of flying in airplanes, which is what this song is about.
"Keine Lust" - My personal favorite lyrics-wise, I suppose one could call this the "sexual deviant" song. On "Mutter," this would be "Zwitter" or "Rein, Raus." On "Herzeleid," one could couple this genre to "Wollt ihr das Bett im Flamen sehen?" or "Leichzeit." Thing is, this song is about someone who has no desire for any sexual activity whatsoever. Translated, the title means "No Desire."
"Los" - The story of Rammstein, more or less. Basically, it starts out stating that they were originally a nameless group with a few followers, but when they gained popularity, the general populus reacted with shock and disgust, trying to censor everything they did because they didn't understand the language. The use of the word "los" is quite prevalent, and is the source of many a pun in this song. Because of the many different meanings of the word, the title cannot properly be translated.
"Amerika" - The anti-American culture song. Basically, they're denouncing how much American culture has affected the rest of the world, showing it to be for the worse.
"Moskau" - This song has no album precidence; it's their bi-lingual song. Performed as a co-op with the Russian group t.A.T.u., this song is about the wonderful city of Moscow.
"Morgenstern" - One of only two possibly anti-religious songs Rammstein has ever really done, and that's only if you interpret it incorrectly. Yes, it's about a woman and her potential lover begging Lucifer (the Morningstar) for her beauty, but if you look at the song as a whole, it's about human acceptance based on personality as opposed to looks. A wonderful song, this is a mix between Gregorian chant and metal; the title translates as "Morningstar."
"Stein um Stein" - The obsession song. Another ballad, but not as creepy as "Dalai Lama" and focusing more on the fact that the narrator is obsessed with a woman who wants to leave him; he cannot allow that to happen. Translated, the title is "Stone by Stone."
"Ohne Dich" - This sounds at first like a love song, very much like "Nebel" off "Mutter," but it's actually more of a "I'd've been better off never knowing you" kind of song. Basically, he couldn't stand to be with her, but at the same time can't stop thinking about her and the times they had together. Translation means "Without You."
"Amour" - This is the song denouncing love followed by seperation. It personifies love as a wild animal, always out on the prowl for its next victim. The title is French for "Love."
